“In the year 5555, Your arms hangin’ limp at your sides, Your legs got nothin’ to do, Some machine’s doing that for you.” – Zager and Evans, “In the year 2525”
The songwriters obviously didn’t have broadband Internet. Anyone who thinks the future is that mechanized and boring will probably change their tune after seeing the recent SBC Yahoo DSL Hometown tour in Greenville, Michigan. Recently presented at the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, the SBC Yahoo DSL Hometown tour is a traveling technology showcase making dozens of stops around the country. While educating people on the benefits of high-speed Internet, it also provides hands-on demonstrations of tools and gadgets best suited for those with broadband and home wireless networks.
The showcase is equal-opportunity. The technologies shown were from a wide range of companies, including HP, Dell, Apple, Linksys, and Sony.
Handheld devices
The more advanced handheld units like the Dell Axiom incorporate wireless capabilities, so they can connect to wireless networks. This gives you the ability to browse the Web, check email and play online games, all without leaving your favorite recliner. Dell Axiom models start at $280.

Wireless printing
Advantages of wireless printers include freedom of location and lack of cabling to any single PC. As long as the printer is within range of your wireless network’s access point (about 150 feet), you can print to it. This setup is perfect for multi-computer households or if you want the printer out of the way. Setup and pricing depends on your equipment. See your printer manufacturer for details about making your printer wireless.
Wireless security camera
The $115 Linksys WVC11B is a wireless video camera. Use it to increase home security or just to keep an eye on the kids. Place it anywhere, move it any time and don’t worry about cabling. The wireless video signal can be sent to any computer for viewing and recording.

Wireless radio
Many people store music on their computers. This can be downloaded songs from online stores, or personal copies of their own CDs, tapes and records. Wireless radio units like the $130 Linksys WMLS11B allows your PC to send audio to a stand-alone boom box. Or, if you already have a good stereo system, you can plug the unit in and take advantage of your higher-quality speakers.

Full-time wireless Internet
For those who want their wireless fix anywhere they travel, cards like the Sony Ericsson GC83 do the trick. With a subscription plan (starting at $20 per month), you can get an Internet connection for your laptop or handheld. You don’t have to look for wireless-enabled hotels or coffee shops. Just turn on, and you’re online.

Wi-Fido
The “geewhiz” toy of the day is the Sony Aibo. This robotic dog responds to touch and sound, barks, shakes “hands”, plays with toys and people, and will even walk to its recharging base and plug in when batteries are low. A digital camera allows Aibo to take digital pictures and recognize people and toys. A microphone allows it to recognize voices and commands, and know what direction those noises come from. And best of all, no messes. It’s up to you if that’s worth $2000.
