Straight from Google's Gmail "What's New" section, we see this:
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.
If you're interested in getting a Gmail account, go to http://www.gmail.com or let me know. I use Gmail and have many invitation available for those who want them.
It's small things like this that make for major changes in the industry. First, it was Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and others competing to have the largest email allocation available. "We offer a gig! "Oh yeah, we've got two gigs!" In their competition, they seemed to focus on the numbers and marketing, and forget about us, the users they serve. With this move, Google has redefined things: They're doing what most benefits the end user, at the same time chastising those who think storage is a straight numbers game.
