Voice recognition and hardware system requirements
Question:
I came across your informative website and wondered if you would be kind enough to answer a question. I am about to buy Dragon [NaturallySpeaking] 9 and a new laptop to carry around to the places that I consult to. I would use the laptop for dictating and editing reports and surfing the Internet. I am not a gamer or multimedia person although I do basic PowerPoint presentations. A firm I consult to gets me a 25% discount on Dell products so I tend to lean in the Dell direction.
I have been considering the Dell 430 for its size although the new Dell XPS 1330 is getting really good reviews. They price out in the same ballpark. The Dell 430 is significantly smaller and lighter and attractive for that reason. I don’t think that I would be bothered by it’s smaller screen. It’s CPU, however, is not as powerful as the XPS. On the 430 I would get the Intel Core2 Duo Processor ULV U7600 (1.20GHz, 533Mhz) w/biometric reader and 2 Gigs of ram. On the XPS I would get the Intel® Core(tm) 2 Duo Processor T7100 (2MB cache/1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB) and 3 Gigs of ram.
Would it be a mistake to get the 430 because of it’s CPU. Would it make a significant difference in dictating and editing with Dragon 9, as this is the primary function. It would not be the end of the world to carry around a slightly bigger computer, but I do like the idea of the smaller one, if I am not giving up utility for my purpose.
Your thoughts on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
The CPU and memory installed in a PC will affect the speed and overall quality of voice recognition. If VR is going to be the primary purpose for your laptop, I strongly recommending getting the fastest one with the highest amount of memory you can.
