Toshiba Satellite A10 error: Retrieval of THotkey failed. Error code: 0×00031402, 0×00000002
Question:
I’ve searched the net for a solution to the problem described below with out success. However, it appears relatively common since it is discussed on several sites, for example “help2go”. I suspect though that for most it remains un resolved.
When I boot up my laptop I get this error msg:-
TouchED
Retrieval of THotkey failed. Error code: 0×00031402, 0×00000002
Can you explain what has gone wrong?
Are you able to suggest how I might put it right?
The fault appears to be related to Toshiba laptops only. Some have suggested down loading a “common module” from the Toshiba site but I cannot locate the file. Another suggested pasting 00THotkey.exe into the Startup directory, but I can’t locate this file either.
My pc is a Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 laptop (Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R), 4 – M CPU 2.00GHz240MB of RAM) and the system is Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 with service pack 2.
Sorry to trouble you but sorting this out has become a challenge!
Answer:
I don’t have the Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 laptop, so any research I’m doing is something I’m not able to test. However, it looks to me like you’re just missing your keyboard hotkey driver. A “hotkey” is sometimes referred to as the “extra” keys on a keyboard, apart from the letters, numbers and function keys. Hotkeys could be things like volume controls, or play/step/previous/next buttons used in music playback.
This seems to be your same issue. I’d try that: re-download the “Toshiba Display Hotkey Utility for Windows XP” file for your Toshiba A10. (First be sure to remove your existing Toshiba Hotkey Utility if possible, in your Control Panel’s Add/Remove Programs tool. If you don’t see it there, then don’t worry.)
You mentioned you couldn’t find the file you need. I believe it’s located at Toshiba’s laptop support. Go to that site, then continue with the steps below.
1) Click “Portables”, then “Satellite”, then your model (I’ll pick “A10-S100″, in order to continue my instructions).
2) Click “Show Results”.
3) Click “Downloads”.
4) Look at the selections. I see this, which is probably the one we’re looking for: “Toshiba Display Hotkey Utility for Windows XP“. Click it.
5) You’ll be taken to a download page. Click the Download link, and the file will be saved on your PC.
6) After the file downloads, run it. It should reinstall the utility you need, and will hopefully fix the issue.
If this doesn’t fix the issue, then also try downloading and installing the following files from the same support site, as one of these may also contain the fix for your problem:
Alps Pointing Device Driver
Toshiba ACPI Common Modules
Toshiba Common Modules
Toshiba Hotkey Utility
Toshiba Touchpad Disable/Enable Utility
Toshiba Utilities

Thank you also. However, for the next person, heads up that the Toshiba website has changed. You may find the following steps helpful.
1. Determine the exact type, model, and O/S of your computer
17 September 2009, 11:18 am2. Remove old utility file as noted above
3. Click above “Toshiba’s laptop support” link to go to Toshiba Support
4. Click Download button
5. Chose your Category, Family, and Model, and click GO
6. Refine the search results by choosing Operating System, and “Display”.
7. Click Title link “Toshiba Hotkey Utility for Display Device”
8. Click Download Now
9. In popup, click Save File. This is an executable
10. Locate download and run .exe
11. Click setup and file will install.
12. Retart computer (which I’m about to do, so let’s hope it works
Wendy:
The “Toshiba Hotkey utility for Display Device” did not end the error window. I could not find some of the other drivers listed above. But, I did download the “Toshiba ACPI Common Modules for Windows XP” driver, installed it, and this one did the trick. Thanks, again, to the first person who wrote this all up.
