Reel-to-reel tape to MP3 conversion
Question:
My husband has a reel-to-reel tape machine and would like to convert some of these old recordings to the new digital format. Any suggestions? I know Ion Audio has the device(s) to convert LPs to cd/mp3. Any such user friendly [conversion advice] for reel-to-reels and cassettes tapes?
Answer:
In order to convert from reel-to-reel to MP3 or another digital format, what you need to concern yourself with is the type of output from your reel-to-reel tape player. Look at the “line out” jack, or if that’s not available, the “headphone” jack. Read this page to learn the basics of cassette tape to MP3 conversion.
The only difference between that page and what you’ll have to do is change the cable connecting the player (your reel-to-reel player) and the recorder (most likely your PC).
In the above link, I mention that you need a “3.5mm (1/8-inch) male-male stereo audio cable”. In your case, this cable will be different. Find out the type of jack that comes from the output of your reel-to-reel player. You’ll need a cable with one end fitting that type of connector (this will depend on your reel-to-reel player), and the other end fitting your recorder (probably the same 3.5mm male stereo audio cable).
I can’t tell you exactly what type of cable or cable converters to use, but that should get you pretty close. If you know what type of jack is used by your reel-to-reel player output, you’ll be able to get the converter you need.
I know Ion Audio has the device(s) to convert LPs to cd/mp3.
As for this, I’m not familiar with the specific device you mention. If you’d like me to give an opinion on that, please provide a link and/or a model number.
