Audacity recording is too quiet

Question:

I downloaded Audocity some months ago and have just started using it to convert my dozens of cassette tapes.
 
I am having a certain amount of trouble getting a reasonably high level of sound from it.  Should I be making any setting before pressing the red circle. The Audacity recording is very quiet but I don’t seem to have any static building up.

Deleting a section of audio in Audacity

Question:

I have had audacity for a while now but just started using it.
The recording does great, my only problem I am having is in the editing there are sections of the recording I wish to delete but cannot seem to get it to delete or edit out.

High-speed dubbing with Audacity

Question:

What’s the solution for high-speed dubbing of cassette tapes to digital format (mp3)?  My tape player can play the tapes at high speeds. Do you know of a software will will record at high speeds but then save and playback in normal speeds?

Echo during Audacity recording

Question:

When listening to a playing of an audio casette while recording, I hear both the playback and record audio a millisecond apart, creating a confusing echo. How can I mute one or the other?
