I agree with Shelly above. It's unfortunate that an individual can't do a reverse look-up to verify that respondents to classified ads are legitimate, especially when in their replies to classified postings they have two email addresses and several names. I recently posted an ad on Craig's list and got a reply from someone who stated they were at work (email address showed up as: From: Tarah Gardner but asked me to email "her" at home, so “she” could send me a photo of an item I was looking for, cause "she" couldn't respond from work (funny, because "she" just did), gave a home email address as: louiseholly104+56456@gmail.com and signed the reply: Marilyn. In using some of the free email search engines I came across registrations for these email addresses as Frankfort Maine and Sunnyvale California. Just a bit too fishy to follow up with "her" request for a reply. Thanks for the information on absence of a Google directory. Maybe someone could start a searchable database of questionable or bogus email address.

I just received a call from this number, I wish I would have answered...I HATE BANK OF AMERICA! I have nearly perfect credit but since banks decided to take away credit, BOA reduced my purchasing power from nearly $25,000 to $500 (I've NEVER paid off a Credit Card late and have NEVER carried a balance). When I called them, they said I'm too risky to have credit with them...then when I purchased a home, my loan was sold to them! They go around buying loans from unknown sources that could potentially be risky borrowers, but refuse to extend credit to a proven good customer. Great business you're running BOA, I can't wait until all my taxes are paying for your business which you refuse to include me on! And what's with them not taking Automatic Payments for for mortgage? Are they hoping I forget to make a payment? NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

Hey KL.

Not sure why that game popped into my head just now, but it did and I had to look online to see if there was any information about it online. My brother and I used to play that game for hours on end when we were kids. My father had gotten us an Apple IIe in 1984 and a childhood friend of ours had given us a pirated floppy disk. I vaguely remember that there was an elevator that you had to use and put on a mask or you would drown when it mysteriously filled with water, and there was also a section where you had to use a magic rope that floated up into the sky...It was probably the only game that we were never able to complete. We were convinced that the instruction book that we didn't have, must have had some enlightening tips or important information that we were missing. Anyway, I noticed your posting and it brought back a FLOOD of childhood memories. I hope that you find some information on the game. If you do, I'd really appreciate you shooting me a note. It always drove me crazy that I was never able to solve it... I promise to do the same.

i have the same problem but this is with audacity version 1.3 beta.
i had the older version and had none of these problems.
so i recommend you all go back to that version but download and install the VST enabler as some of u might be using vst plugins that wont work directly in the program.

I have transferred VHS to DVD, with the DVD record speed set at "XP" - allowing one hour of video per DVD. Did this affect transfer quality, since it was not set at "SP"? I've already transferred over 75 hours!

Thanks so much for info. My mortgage originated with Countrywide, enough said. I have business with BoA due to the mortgage and I want no further business with them. They are absolutely horrible...a customer service nightmare, the sooner I pay my mortgage off the sooner I will be rid of them. The many and annoying solicitation calls for different products border on the ridiculous. I just entered my info be removed from their call list... again, thanks!

Hi,

1. preferably use the 'line in' in the desktop for conversion. Avoid using laptops. If u r using laptop, u may use the 'mic' socket at 'low' volume from cassette player. But some times it may not give u proper results. Every device has its own purpose.
1. Mic - to receive speach not for any 'line in' activity
2.Head phone and 'speaker out' socket - to connect headphone and speakers not to take 'line out' to any othe device( not for 'line out' activity)..
3.Line in - to give the signal (from other device)
4.Line out- to take the signal (to other device)
All the modern/costly devices will have all these 5 devices.

that's a fantastic way to wipe out user exceptions: files, directories

this is the bit excessive part:

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Custom Tasks]

Otherwise thanks for trying to cut down on bloat..

In the similar tree in LocalMachine disable the pref EnableDefwatchQuickscan :)

I too was the victim of PlanetDVDStore.com..........They duplicated my order & instead of 1 set they duplicated my order & were going to charge my credit card with 3 sets. I couldn't find a phone number for them but I contacted my credit card company & was put thru to the fraud department. I sent many messages to PlanetDVDStore.com & nobody answered me. One day in frustration, I sent them message after message telling them that I was going to clog their whole system until somebody answered me & I got a message back finally saying that I didn't need to contact the fraud division of my credit card company, that they had canceled both orders. Now I wait to see if they truly have credited my account back the full amount, over $150.........what a mess!! It was a lesson well learned, I can assure you of that.

well, my recording slowly speeds up.
so... say i sing a 5 minute song perfectly in time to backing, when i play it back, my voice will be gradually getting ahead of the backing until it's like 10 seconds ahead or more and sounds terrible. it's weird and i can't find a solution :s

If you adjust the latency correction it might solve the problem. I adjusted it to about -125 milliseconds and that seemed to do the trick.

Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O. It's near the bottom.

Amazing! This just happened to me. I restored my files to my new HD from the Vista backup on my external HD. I am finding out the hard way that all my .JS files are missing!!!

Luckily, I can go to my live web sites and FTP them back down, but this is embarrassing.

THIS SOLUTION DEFINITELY WORKS TO GET RID OF THE ECHO DURING THE RECORDINGS:

Turn off those options and see if it makes a difference: In Audacity, open the “Edit” menu and go to “Preferences”. Click the “Audio I/O” tab. UNCHECK the boxes for “Play other tracks while recording new one” and “Software playthrough“. Then try recording again.

THANK YOU TO THE INDIVIDUAL WHO POSTED THIS INFORMATION UP. IT WAS VERY HELPFUL! THANKS ONCE AGAIN :-)

what you need is an auto slitter. a program that splits big files into smaller sections. then burn all the separate files and wala you have separate tracks.. I know at churches most of the time they never seperate the tracks while recording.. there are several free ones out there. do a search for auto splitting or mp3/ wav splitting. i currently am trying avs.. good luck.

My hopes and dreams have all but been squashed of playing modern warfare 2 that comes out 11/10/09 because I have no idea when there going to get there act together and start communicateing to fix the problem. I have every right to be outragege at how we've been jerked around on multiple occations and are still out of tv and Internet.
Glad I came across this website and I want to thank all those who have contributed their comments. Does anyone know anything about a site called muchdvd.com? Wondering if they are on the level...or just another fraudulent site (?). Oh, and Good Luck to everyone who registered a complaint. It's amazing how many people will take advantage of others these days and it's also a sad note!

Aaarghh!

Just worked out what the problem is.

Even if you select part of a track, the Effect menu WILL NOT WORK IF THE PAUSE BUTTON IS PRESSED! So you think you've stopped the track, but in fact you only paused it...

This is a bit hard to spot - I'd even read something related to this in the help and didn't realise this was my problem - maybe a tooltip to help people who click the Effect menu with a track paused?

Cheers, hope this helps the guy above.

Hmmm. Nope, I get exactly the same problem. I've sampled a CD, it's a wav file, now I'm dragging the mouse to select a part of the audio clip (it goes kind of greyer), but all the entries on the "Effect" menu are still greyed out.

Lots of other menu items are inactive too - I mean ones you'd expect to be active, like "Cut", "Copy" and "Paste" under the "Edit" menu - luckily there are toolbar buttons for these (which _are_ working, even though the menu versions aren't).

Maybe it's a bug, but the only time I've seen this has been with trial versions of software. I'll look around and see if there's a paid-for version of Audacity, as I really need a destructive audio trimmer, and this looks ideal, if I can get it to work.

Cheers.

I ordered dvds from dvd avenue. I waited a week for the shipping confirmation and started making phone calls and emails to them. When I got the "electronic runaround", I searched for anyone having problems with these people. I found this web site and immediately called my credit card company. I hadn't been charged as yet so we cancelled my card on the spot. I'm so glad I got suspicious and looked for help!

I used to run Vista, it had terrible problems especially with general working speed and sound failures. A friend helped me to uninstall and replace the system with XP. Then I learned to work Image for DOS, there I have two hard drives which work together, and it works 10 times faster and more efficiently.
Also I have repeated problems with updates for XP, which slow the computer down and seem to clog it up and all I need to do is restore the earlier image which worked really well. Now I am not sure how important the updates are, or what they are really for, or are supposed to do, because they do the opposite of making things better!

"The Untouchables," 1959 to 1962, was my all-time favorite television program when I was a teenager. I ordered the 22 disc, 118 episode set and was surprised to find out that 14 of the episodes were either "The Muppets" or "Grizzly Adams." In addition, 8 other episodes were defective and stopped during the middle of the show.

You can imagine my bewilderment when "The Muppets" and "Grizzly Adams" shows popped up on the DVD instead of "The Untouchables." I tried unsuccessfully to get either a refund or another DVD box set. I will never order anything over the internet again. DVD Avenue.TV is corrupt, incompetent and dishonest.

Hi everyone,

I think this is the time to close the thread. We moved beyond the original topic and have dropped down to political bashing of individuals and institutions, which I have no interest in doing for this particular conversation. The topic is "The Story of Stuff" and the ideas it presented. Thanks to everyone for their comments and intellect - your time spent on this thread was appreciated!

We watched "Story of Stuff" tonight and must admit, as expected, that it is the biggest bunch of bull we have ever seen. Just another sign of what our kids are seeing, and being taught, in the govt. schools. It goes right along with the way obama feels about our country. He is doing his best to destroy our country and stuff like "Story of Stuff" is helping him. I would say God help our country but I think it is too late. Aren't you and your ilk happy about that.

It all depends on how far down you're willing to go. When you say "CPU" to one person, they think "chip". Say it to someone else, they think "motherboard". A third person, they think "that box on my desk". They don't get that there's something inside that can be subdivided, and there may be issues with just replacing that subdivided piece.

As for the chip level -- YES, some machines use standardized sockets. But many do not. Especially if you want to go from an Intel chip to a cheaper, but more modern, AMD chip. They don't necessarily fit the same form factor. And the original answer was correct that OTHER pieces may still keep you from realizing the full potential of even a plug-compatible CPU chip. If you put a 440-horse V8 with a Holly 4-barrel in a 3-speed Pinto, it's still going run like a 3-speed Pinto. A LOUD 3-speed Pinto, but a 3-speed Pinto. You need a new transmission, a high-performance clutch, and probably a new rear end. And better tires and suspension might help, too.

Now we're talking "motherboard" level. that's the circuit board inside that the chips all plug into, and your expansion boards stick up from. It'll support faster memory, and won't hold your new, faster processor back from doing it's best. but you may be able to use most or even all of your old expansion cards, the power supply, drives, and case, without modifying anything. But it'll cost a bit more. Too much more, or if too many expansion boards are obsolete, and you'll start thinking about replacing that whole box with a new one.

But you'll still be able to move your hard drives if they've got room in them to spare, perhaps your optical drives, and your monitor may still be ok. And chances are your network card will be ok. Ditto the keyboard and mouse. Unless you've changed your needs so much that NONE of the computer meets them anymore, you should be able to keep some of it.

Or if you're just Johnny Whiz-Bang, and need the biggest, baddest, and newest of everything, throw the old one in the dumper, and buy all new gear as soon as it's on Engadget. But that's expensive and wasteful.

If you put a 440-horse V8 with a Holly 4-barrel in a 3-speed Pinto, it’s still going run like a 3-speed Pinto. A LOUD 3-speed Pinto, but a 3-speed Pinto. You need a new transmission, a high-performance clutch, and probably a new rear end. And better tires and suspension might help, too.

Now we’re talking “motherboard” level. that’s the circuit board inside that the chips all plug into, and your expansion boards stick up from. It’ll support faster memory, and won’t hold your new, faster processor back from doing it’s best. but you may be able to use most or even all of your old expansion cards, the power supply, drives, and case, without modifying anything. But it’ll cost a bit more. Too much more, or if too many expansion boards are obsolete, and you’ll start thinking about replacing that whole box with a new one.

But you’ll still be able to move your hard drives if they’ve got room in them to spare, perhaps your optical drives, and your monitor may still be ok. And chances are your network card will be ok. Ditto the keyboard and mouse. Unless you’ve changed your needs so much that NONE of the computer meets them anymore, you should be able to keep some of it.

Or if you’re just Johnny Whiz-Bang, and need the biggest, baddest, and newest of everything, throw the old one in the dumper, and buy all new gear as soon as it’s on Engadget. But that’s expensive and wasteful.
