It's disappointing when someone says humans are inherently flawed, so we're more or less doomed. That is just another way of shirking responsibility. There is no logical reason to blame the gods, so to speak, for the environmental mess we are in. Crows aren't flawed. Dolphins aren't flawed. Rabbits aren't flawed. Why would humans be? We are animals, after all, and homo sapiens were doing just fine for the first 190,000 years or so of their existence. The planet didn't start getting destroyed until the so-called "Agricultural Revolution." Something has gone wrong...

To anyone interested in making sure our species and countless others survive past the next couple centuries, I recommend reading Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. It's incredibly informative and has me thinking it's not too late yet to make a difference.

"Just a reminder that Dragon and other dictation software has to be “trained” to one voice to work well as a transcriber".

That used to be true, but Dragon Naturally Speaking (DNS) 10+ seems to have worked around that. Of course you still have to proof read the text (an example used in the DNS doc's - "go to room B40" - may come out as "go to room before tea").

I bought the least expensive of DNS a year ago after giving up on speech to text software a few years ago. And was very pleasently surprised with new program. A bigger concern to me would be the quality of the voice recorders output. To really get good results with DNS I bought a GOOD Plantronics headset.

Vista have been kill me.. What you said is correct..
I have one file near-deadline and very important, I have made them for days, and it is .JS
When Vista accidentally crash one day before deadline, it automatically restore, and what that I get.. The glory file is missing, and now i can't do anything instead re-write it from the beginning..

I wonder how many people have suffered because of Vista..

Hello,

I installed a Lynksis WRT120N router. The router configured ok and is secure. The trouble is, two laptops with Windows XP could not log on. A macbook pro laptop logged on with no problems. Could you advise me what to do next?

Thanks,
Tony

You can't blame a motion capture game, specifically one which deals with the incredible cardiovascular system of boxers. I myself have been boxing for years, and have kept in pretty good shape my whole life. I love this game and have never once felt any extreme sense of exhaustion; nothing more than a light exercise.

Maybe if your fiance had realized his physical limitations and not tried to act as if he were an actual boxer, and stopped when he felt himself getting physically tired, you wouldn't have had to ask such a stupid question.

I have also been receiving telemarketing calls from this number. Since July 5, 2010, I receive multiple calls almost every day, although I've told them not to call and stated clearly I am on the Do Not Call Registry. I have since reported them to the DNC registry multiple times. And, because they have used my account at Bank of America as a loophole to harass me with these calls, I have now closed all accounts at Bank of America and will not return. I told the BoA agent that also, and she requested the number that has been calling me so she can escalate the complaint within BoA and hopefully stop the calls if they get enough negative feedback from account holders, or in my case, EX account holders.

I have Burnt Music CDs using:
1. My iTunes Playlist.
2. My Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe.
I have tried and re-tried.
They simply will not play on my CD Player, but on my Windows Vista, they're fine!

I am hopeful that this link will be helpful to you.

Bank of America does allow you to opt out of all solicitation online through: https://www5.bankofamerica.com/privacy/Preferences.do

This will initiate a 4 step process to remove your name, home address, up to 3 phone numbers and up to 5 email addresses from third-party spam.

You may even print a confirmation page with date, time, and the personal information that you requested not be used by third-parties any more.

I just completed this tonight. I hope this helps.

I have one extra tip to add for re-syncing audio.

Sometimes you might be stuck in a situation where you have recording where the first half of the track is in sync but is out of sync later at certain parts. You can select long notes in their performance to do a slight tempo stretch. Select just a sliver that doesn't have much distinguishing about it and go to Effects>Change Tempo. This will preserve the tone of the audio but time stretch it, which will push the following audio further out in time, re-syncing it. It's easiest to experiment with this to find the right percentage of change you want to apply to the clip to get the rest of your track to sound in place.

An annoying part about doing this is any envelopes you have applied to this sliver of audio will be reset to 100%, but that's an easy fix.

I too feel that the film glossed oversimplified some bits and pulled facts out of thin air. I did buy her new(ish) book however and just finished reading through it.

The book talks about a lot of things happen in developing countries (out of our view) and explains the concepts from the film in great detail.

Read the book and let us know what you think!

I have a Canon Video camera that works with the small mini dvd's. When a dvd is complete, it has to be finalized to enable to play on PC or DVD player, yet it cannot be edited on the PC and if mini DVD is unfilalized, it will not play on PC. Is there a software available to edit these mini DVD's?
Kind Regards

If this is still valid, here's a blurb I saw on the net:

"There are three common reasons why Gmail users think they're receiving someone else's mail.
Reason one:Your address is similar but has more or fewer dots (.) or different capitalization.
Sometimes you may receive a message sent to an address that looks like yours but has a different number or arrangement of periods. While we know it might be unnerving if you think someone else's mail is being routed to your account, don't worry: both of these addresses are yours.
Gmail doesn't recognize dots as characters within usernames, you can add or remove the dots from a Gmail address without changing the actual destination address; they'll all go to your inbox, and only yours. In short:
homerjsimpson@gmail.com = hom.er.j.sim.ps.on@gmail.com
homerjsimpson@gmail.com = HOMERJSIMPSON@gmail.com
homerjsimpson@gmail.com = Homer.J.Simpson@gmail.com
All these addresses belong to the same person. You can see this if you try to sign in with your username, but adding or removing a dot from it. You'll still go to your account.
If you get mail that seems to be intended for someone else, it's likely that the sender entered the wrong address, just like if you've ever dialed a wrong phone number for someone. In these cases, we suggest contacting the original sender or website when possible to alert them to the mistake.
One last thing: Google Apps does recognize dots. If you'd like to have a dot in your username, please ask your domain administrator to add your preferred username as a nickname."

Now, this doesn't mean that people aren't exploiting this, so take care.

Amazing that this scam is still running after two and a half years. Ignore this garbage. Sometimes I forget rule #1 ("Never educate an asshole") and tell them to go ahead and register my trademark.cn if they really want to have a lot of legal problems, add a few choice words, and "btw, please drop dead." Too bad their IP is in APNIC, since most networks over there don't care about spam or scams. Otherwise I would make the world a better place by getting their email and maybe their website shut down! :D

I have just recorded a cassette using Audacity. While recording I have been listening to the tracks and they have been fine. But when I play them back on Windows Media Player before converting to CD, the level of each track goes up and down in volume. Have you any idea why this is happening ?
                      Thank you,

Go to http://audacity.sourceforge.net and download the new beta there. Fixes this problem + lots of other improvements (like moving chunks of audio within tracks without having to insert silence, makes editing much more easy and percise).

I have ACER laptop and it seems it does not have line-in options for cassett to MP3 recording. I have a stereo cable 3.5 mm at both end. One end is connected to walkman earphone (line-out). I am not getting where to connect to laptop as it has 3 connections of same size. Will I have to use 3.5mm to USB converter. One end is connected to walkman earphone (line-out). I am not getting where to connect to laptop as it has 3 connections of same size. Will I have to use 3.5mm to USB converter. Please guide.

I had just this problem - in my Audacity preferences my sample rate was default 44.1 but 48 on my presonus firepod (or fp10). Set them both to 48kHz and bingo - full volume recording at last! You guys helped me to find it - thanks!

Your articles are really useful. Can you tell us whether it is possible to record at high speed in audacity while the cassette player plays at normal speed? I do not have the play at high speed option in mine.

Yeah tell me about it, I've had three different website accounts hacked all by the same person. I have reason to believe its personal. All I know so far is that the persons email is "mkpmkp12@gmail.com" and they clearly don't have a life. I'm trying to find out who it is, and it is mildly difficult.

i have a new pc with windows 7, and i am running with network problem... it was working very well at the begining and before i noticed that the windows had been update... does this happen after windows update? and if i uninstall those updates would this solve the problem??

note that the network problem is only for one network device... i can connect to everything normaly, just i got disconnected with one device from time to time, while others keep connected very well...
and note that i dont have a problem with this device, it is connected properly with others pc on the same network...

is this problem due to some updated files for windows?
any idea?

Wonderful suggestions, we support needs of blind students with free audio conversion of text books. I wish to know any high speed players as we have 4000 + audio cassette to be converted. More economical the better.

the click tracks that generate in audacity are actually what is causing your recordings to be off, because the click track generator is slightly off from an actual metronome. if you make a click track in audacity, try to play a metronome to the click track and see if it lines up. most likely it wont, and i dont know why no one at sound forge hasnt figured this out yet.

Just a reminder that Dragon and other dictation software has to be "trained" to one voice to work well as a transcriber. It does not work well to transcribe lectures from a speaker who hasn't trained your software. Nor, as a professor, would I recommend straight transcription. Take notes in class, and then listen again to the lecture and fill in gaps in notes. This is more efficient than trying to take dictation, no matter its form. Having a bunch of files with verbatim lectures will not promote learning.
