MacOS versus Windows – What do you think of Macs?

Question:

What do you think of MacBookPro? My daughter needs a new computer and wants a Mac. She is an education major and a lot of schools use Mac. She has two friends that are computer science majors and one thinks Mac is great the other thinks it stinks. You are the tie breaker. :)

Answer:

Here’s my opinion formed both from professional and personal experience (I have just a few clients with Macs, but do have one at home):

PROS:

Macs are great. They’re solid machines, are more intuitive to use than Windows, and because the interface is simpler, things go wrong less often. They’re more stable overall than Windows machines.

CONS:

Some software that is available for Windows machines is NOT available for Macs. Macs are also more expensive than similarly-performing Windows machines.

SUMMARY:

I like both Macs and Windows machines.

In this case, if your daughter wants a Mac and her school(s) use a lot of Macs (and more importantly – explicitly say they support/recommend it), then I’d say to get her a Mac.

Just make sure, before you purchase, that whatever software she needs (like MS Word, Excel, etc) is available for her Mac. The school itself should be able to tell you, as well as the staff at the Mac store.

Finally, regardless of brand, make sure you get the extended hardware warranty for this laptop – college students are not known for being careful with expensive technology, and it being a laptop makes it more likely to be jostled/knocked/broken during transport. Get a three 3-year warranty at least!
