Using noise removal and software playthrough in Audacity
Question:
I’ve just connected a tape deck (w/out speakers) to my laptop and downloaded Audacity. The music gets recorded w/ the software, but I was wondering if there was a way I could hear the music being recorded to know when to stop my recordings? Right now, I just have to stop the recording based on when the frequency level evens out.
Also, the music sounds hollow w/ the hiss in the background of the music at times. Is there anyway to remove this? The noise removal effect only seems to work at the beginning and end of songs.
Answer:
Your first question about not being able to hear your recording is addressed here.
As for noise removal, I don’t have any more advice except tweaking the noise removal tool – you may have to adjust for sensitivity (there is a “less / more” slider that will allow you to remove more or less noise). Also make sure that when using the noise removal tool, the “Get noise profile” selects a particularly hiss-filled part of your recording. And when you select to “remove noise” with that tool, make sure your entire recording is selected, and not just the section you used for your noise profile.
